Henry Troell, a native of Germany, who served in the Confederate Army, was a successful businessman who invested in several local properties and enterprises, including an innovative dam/grist mill operation in Seguin. He expanded the mill’s water and hydroelectric generation capabilities and in the 1890s provided the city its first water and electric utility systems. The city of Seguin bought Troell’s property in 1907 to further develop the river’s hydroelectricity, and subsequent improvements have led to the establishment of a hydroelectric plant on the dam’s south side. The Power Plant Bar and Grill is a cool restaurant housed in the old plant, and is still equipped with the huge generator and early electrical equipment. Going back even further at this site on the Guadalupe River, it was explored by the Spanish in the early 1600's, AND this area was settled by an Irish colony, around the time the first shot for Texas freedom was fired, Oct. 2, 1835 in nearby Gonzales (and that is the next TX History Ride!) Lots of history in this area and dang good food! https://seguinpowerplant.com/seguin-the-powerplant-texas-bar-and-grill-f...
